Eugenics in the Media

Of all people I would expect a comment underlying eugenics to come from, I was most shocked that it came from James Watson. Even if you have taken just general biology courses the name should light a bulb in your head. James Watson is the same guy who came up with the double helix structure. Let me not fail to mention that he did this in partnership with Crick. Anyway, the guy was on a book tour and he made a comment to Sunday Times stating he was

“inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours - whereas all the testing says not really"

He is not the first scientist who has used science to support eugenics. A few years ago a book "the bell curve"was published that discussed intelligence and genetics. Its funny how people forget that the bed of civilization was never in the West but rather in the dark continent. How does race and genes translate to intelligence? Where is the proof in that? Doesn't the burden of proof lie on the one who opens their mouth? Why doesn't Watson and any other scientist out there provide duplicable proof that intelligence lies with the lightness of your skin? Absolutely disgusting that this great figure can say that but I am glad that they suspended him from his job. He needs time to reflect on his actions.

What was worse is that I asked on campus the day the news broke and no one knew what I was talking about. It further supports the fact that American students are not concerned with what happens globally or even nationally. Where are placards? The editorials? If this is the generation that is going to invoke a change then I am ashamed to be counted among its members. I don't even think I saw a statement by the NAACP in regards to the Watson comment. I guess no one cares huh?

A racist prick is always a racist prick, regardless how educated they are. Not only his believe is racist but the very scientific proof he is referring to has in fact dis-proofed his believe - I spit on his octogenarian prick face.

Glad you actually wrote about this SleepD.

The truth of the matter is that in every race/ethnic group there are brilliant individuals and not so brilliant individuals.

What can we say...his comments further reinforce my belief that education is not always synonymous with intelligence.

It is sad that Watson one of the most brilliant scientific minds can be so blinded by his own convictions of superiority that he is no longer capable of reasoning the fundamnetal concepts of humanity and tolerance. The fact that he further erodes a career that should be remembered with distinction and not marred by opinionated bigotry is heartbraking.
One can only assume that Watson's reputation is on the wane and he is coming out with outrageous comments to boost his profile.

As for the issue about you Americans living in your own bubble....As a Brit will say "no comment" just to be on the safe side lol

It is no surprise, he is commenting within a certain paradigm, with an overconfidence in the genetic determinants of behaviour. Funny how he does not comment on the billions and trillions of wealth stolen from Africa and Africans. Surely that could be worked into his 'social policies' model that doesn't work.

Maybe one day, molecular biology will discover the group of genes that cause Whites or Europeans to be genocidal, conniving, bigoted, and Godless people. See how easy it is to use science to harm people.

He knew exactly what he was doing when he said what he said, and he knows his place in the scientific world and used that to hurl abuse at Black Africans. How typical!

Wow... I wasn't even aware that he had said that until I read it here. It's amazing how every year raging lunatics increase so exponentially. There are always more of them. Anyway, I am also waiting to hear when someone will prove "the group of genes that cause Whites or Europeans to be genocidal, conniving, bigoted, and Godless people", as Aya said.

Sadly enough, there will always be people like these around, but it's more scary when they're in positions of power and influence as James Watson is.

A couple weeks later and I am still not sure what to make of him. Sometimes knowledge doesn't translate to intelligence or common sense and Watson is apparently a classic case. At least the ASA (American Scientists Association) decried the comment.

Native Americans are dubious when it comes to the world. What more can I say?
