You got jokes lol. These guys have dishonored the art of taarab. I can't listen to taarab anymore without thinking of bata and samaki.......blah! I thought of writing something with the video but then I thought perhaps people should draw their own conclusions. Some people might just luv ducks :P

first time i heard this bata reference i was around friends from kuze. the only sensual food reference i knew in somali was lug iyo leg, but i was clueless about the bata and my friends just laughed at me. i think it is a clever song.

the front side of the girl at 2:04 is as good as any bata to me :-)

sd, you've wrapped your face completely, bata wako hatoki bandani?

This can't be taarab. Now my nascent interest in taarab is officially on suspention. Maybe it's just all that...booty

^^Completely agree with you Om, but you know what good for the goose isn't necessarily good for the gander por example xirsi seems to have developed a taste lol. As for booty and taarab they go hand in hand in the coastal towns women dance in a circle to taarab tunes but usually they have gunia to keep them away from the peeping toms. What this video has done is undo the gunia so everyone can see the dance and I am not sure it was a good decision.

Xirsi huko huko.......bata wangu wala muhogo wangu hatoki bandani. I already got recognized with even that ninja on by an old neighbour from mlango wa papa and they told my mom about me. Aisee kwanza at least wawezaona macho yangu lakini wewe hata.....Is it don't ask don't tell :-)

lmao @ asha mzanzbari.....That avenue of questioning is dangerous.

Jzk Xirsi.....I am weak when it comes to taarab and believe it or not my mom brought me a cd with this song and others in it lol.

Swali moja lakini, wewe waishi kuze sasa ama kitambo? Na kama ni kitambo miaka ngapi iliyopita ndio uliishi huko? I might know you if you lived there in your eighties and nineties.

six degrees of separation. most definitely we know the same people. ilikuwa jambo tatu ya kumpenda mwanamke - imani yake, ukoo yake na mali yake? i add akili yake. akili yangu ni nusu ya akili yako:-)

Somethings are just better left in secret rituals or it loses all its value:)

Btw, the usual taarab I've seen is usually sung by an octogenarian women (the great Bi Kidude) or the like. At least this genre of music won't be dying out soon...albeit kept alive with a little bit of bata here and there once in a while.

Last summer I attended a wonderful taarab concert in Zanzibar by a local band called Swahili Vibe and it was all wonderful - no bata for sure.

Hehehe @ Om. I guess thats a silver lining about the video. You are right typically the genre is sung by the older generation but perhaps the new generation will put a nice spin to it to make it their own.
